Back in 1996 Heather and I walked into the beautiful Hotel Metropole in Hanoi for lunch, and I don't think the staff were pleased to see us. We'd been back-packing around Vietnam for two weeks, we looked the part, and we'd brought our packs with us! Not normal for fine dining, even at lunchtime. But the staff very nicely gave us a table, and waited for us to order the (very affordable) lunchtime special. Instead, we proceeded to make up for two weeks of roughing it. We ate everything we could fit in, and then some. It was fantastic. Meantime the suits and the frocks around us looked mildly disapproving, and bought the (very affordable) lunchtime special. How often do you assume that people don't have the money, or the desire, to buy? Maybe because you don't have the money, or the desire? It's so easy to do. But we had the money, and after two weeks on the road we definitely had the desire. Personally I don't like wasting money, but show me something I love, and it's not waste any more. Emptying our wallets at the Hotel Metropole was a great pleasure. The most common complaint we hear from photographers is that people "just won't spend the money". And it's probably true. Except when it isn't. In Vegas a young photographer walked into our suite to check out Workspace. He looked just like all the other young photographers, except he was selling Musée. Never assume.
