I have read so many photographer interviews that started out, "I was given my first camera when I was ten". Hands up those who can say that? Certainly I can. I was given a beaten up old Yashica by my father for my tenth birthday. Pity it isn't that easy these days because, let's face it, when film was king an image taken on a 50 year old twin reflex could still create a beautiful neg. So why did we start taking photos? I bet it wasn't for money. It was the love of capturing the image. This is where every photographer starts leaving the crowd behind. The passion and the excitement of taking the shot. How many of you still photograph for the love of it?  Or have you got to the point were each time you press the shutter you're thinking about business? We all totally understand, but if this all you're doing it's time to go and have some fun. Ian goes on about how "they" reckon it's no good to fall in love with your product, because it clouds your judgment, but if that's the case we're doomed anyway. I truly believe you need to step outside your comfort zone and just take pictures. Looking at your websites I can see most of you do, but don't leave the images in your camera or computer, Frame something, make a book and leave it casually lying around the studio, put some stuff in Workspace and send us a link to share with everyone. Cheers, Pete

Hey Pete, We have so much in common.  I was 10 when I got a beautifully packaged Kodak Starlet Camera. It wasn't my first but definitely the one I remember the most, It was stunning. I  remember how it looked. It came complete with flash bulbs and film. It was "my kid in a candy shop moment". Kodak sure knew how to delight a child.  by the time I was 16 I worked at Kodak (NZ) where we were immersed in Camera "Candy". Every weekend we had our pick of the stock cameras.  I'd moved on from the Starlet by then and my real love was now the Rolliflex. Yes photography for the soul. Thank you for the post and for reminding me I gotta start taking some pics. Cheers H
