Three things I love... Metaphors ("Remix 'Collections' are like iTunes Playlists"). Stories (like Danny's PJ speed test). One-liners ("Colour management used to be just calling the lab to complain about your prints.") Words, that's all... But they make you think. They illuminate what you're saying and make it memorable. They use the familiar to explain the unfamiliar. They're gems of great price if you polish them till they shine, and really awkward if you don't. Cheers, Ian A few more from Bob Tulloch's seminar in Auckland last Wednesday: Our clients have two motivations, love and pride. We're To View More >>
Bob had another noteworthy one-liner in his seminar: "Gen Y is about to discover the difference between a Want and a Need." You need to understand that Bob was sharing the stage with young Danny, and there were plenty more Gen Y in the audience... I'm a Boomer like Bob, so I was fine with it, but Danny said, "I wonder whether he offended anyone?" FWIW it made me think about two aspects of "framing" your photography. Bob used certain words to describe his role (artist, historian) and what motivated his clients (love, pride). He's framing his photography as a Need, not a Want. Something they can't To View More >>
As a proud parent I look at other babies and want to know if we are doing okay. (It's the first time and we have no standard to work from.) When two babies meet it is easy to overlook the needs of the other parent as you well up with pride in the achievements of your offspring. Photographers can be the same with their personal prides. Good etiquette with babies is to resist outdoing the other parent with the successes of your own child (sleeps through night ... makes own breakfast, gifted, etc). Because even though it is reassuring to acknowledge the superiority of your genealogy it has no social To View More >>
We asked one of our print consultants about their commitment to sustainability a few days ago, and they were rather puzzled by the question. "But of course," they said. "It goes without saying doesn't it? Sustainable plantation paper ... ECF processing ... vegetable-based inks. We don't beat the drum about it, that's just the way it is these days." We feel the same way, but we're regularly asked the same question, so here's Queensberry's philosophy on the environment and sustainability... Humanity's biggest impact on the environment is generally from our daily practices. That coffee is gone To View More >>
We are about six weeks off having a child ... holy moley! Actually, Jo is pushing for an early arrival ... Our child will do no wrong, and it will certainly never vomit or cry inappropriately. We know this because we'll be the proud parents and our pride will blind us to our newborn's shortcomings. Or maybe it's love, not pride... Stepping down a level, our pride in our albums, the stories they tell, and their look and feel, help us to talk passionately (not blindly) about them. It's our passionate gestures and words that gives our pride a voice. It's infectious. Only six weeks!!!!!!! (or less) To View More >>
